The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico -- GulfQuest -- offers unparalleled opportunities to learn about the historical, cultural and economic significance of the Gulf of Mexico through some 90 permanent exhibits and relevant traveling exhibitions. Among other activities, visitors can "pilot" a cutter through Mobile Bay; learn about the "Pelican Girls,” also called Casket Girls, who were brought to the region from France to marry French settlers; and explore "Today's Ocean" through selecting topics and viewing onscreen presentations. Many exhibits are interactive and others invite viewers to read and reflect. Just across Water Street from downtown, and located next to the Alabama Cruise Terminal, GulfQuest offers free parking. The Swift-Coles Historic Home in Bon Secour is a historic house museum and event venue built in 1882. The original structure was later expanded into a 6,000-square-foot home reflective of the Gulf Coast vernacular and Creole cottage architecture prevalent in the region. The museum is currently owned and operated by the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission, which maintains the property and cares for the home with the help of volunteers.
